Macintosh Networking Utilities
These are tools that are useful for managing and troubleshooting AppleTalk and
TCP/IP networks from a Macintosh. No Network administrator should leave home
without these. These are all run from the MacOS.
Shareware/Freeware:
TCP/IP Tools for MacOS:
- WhatRoute - Ping/Traceroute/DNS query utility plus Telnet-Server for
MacOS. Useful for pinging, tracerouting and issuing DNS queries from a Mac. Telnet-Server is used for
telnetting to the Mac's IP address to issue the same commands via command-line prompt across
the network. The Telnet-Server does not give you access to any MacOS executables.
- NCSA Telnet - Telnet client & FTP-Server for the MacOS. Allows you to
telnet from the Mac, and set up the Mac as an FTP-Server.
- Fetch - FTP-client for MacOS.
- Netpresenz - FTP server for the Mac on steroids.
- TFTP Daemon - TFTP server for MacOS. Useful for storing your router
configurations, and net-booting your router from.
- Daemon - Finger/Whois/Ident/NTP/Daytime daemon for MacOS. Just like the
Unix equivalent.
- ZTerm - Terminal Emulator for MacOS. Use for communicating to devices
connected to a Mac's serial port, like modems, routers, ISDN TAs, etc.
- IPNetRouter - Software-Based TCP/IP Router. Install on a Macintosh with 2 or more Ethernet cards connected to 2 or more subnets, and route TCP/IP across them.
AppleTalk Tools for MacOS:
- Trawl - AppleTalk sniffer. Build graphical pictures of your AppleTalk
LAN & WAN. Find out what AppleTalk network-numbers belong to what devices.
- MacPing - Ping tool, for pinging AppleTalk & IP nodes. Other Ping tools ping TCP/IP nodes but not AppleTalk nodes. This
one does AppleTalk.
- OTTool - Small utility that displays a Mac's AppleTalk & IP configuration
parameters.
- LanSatellite - Network monitoring & mapping software for AppleTalk networks.
- UAR - Software-based AppleTalk router. Install on a Macintosh with 2
or more Ethernet cards connected to 2 or more subnets, and route
AppleTalk across them.
- WDT Remote Admin - Lets you manipulate a Mac remotely via a
Telnet session. Similar to 'Backorifice' for Windows. Useful
for accessing your Mac over the Internet or an IP-only LAN.
- ToolDaemon
- Another tool that lets you manage a Mac remotely via a
Telnet session. Basically a poor-man's alternative to Timbuktu.
- AppleTalk Security Tools - Utilities to see how insecure your AppleTalk network is.
